Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) is a premier private medical school granting an opportunity for striving medical students from all over the world to satisfy their dream to become a doctor (physician). The School of Medicine of Ross University offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree program. Nearly 3,500 students enroll per year at RUSM; 98% are from US or Canada. It has 26-acre fully equipped, technologically advanced campus in Picard, Dominica; hospital, classroom and clinical examination rooms at Princess Margaret Hospital. The Medical school is served by 90+ member faculty with MD and /or PhD credentials who provide practical & comprehensive knowledge of clinical areas.
Through the Foundations of Medicine curriculum, all students complete the fundamental basic science courses of study in Dominica. Every student must complete his/her pre-clinical course in within 16 or 20 months. It depends on which curricular track student selects. Before student continuing their clinical education at one of more than 29 teaching hospital in the US (which are affiliated with RUSM), student must completed The IMF clerkship through the affiliation of Haitian Studies. MD degree from RUSM is awarded to students after completion of program of medical education and passing Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge and Step 2 Clinical Skills of the United States Medicine Licensing Examination. RUSM graduate can get licenses in US, Canada, in addition to Puerto Rica.
DeVry Education Group is the the parent organization of RUSM. It is a publicly traded company that also has American University of the Caribbean (AUC), another reputed medical school in the Caribbean areas.
History
The Medical School was founded in 1978 by Robert Ross, an business tycoon. Originally its name was the University Of Dominica School Of Medicine. At the time of set up, RUSM was the first US medical school located outside of the United States of America. RUSM was housed in leased facilities at The Castaways Hotel, with an inaugural class of 11 students in 1978. At the request of government of Dominica in 1982, the university’s name was changed into as Ross University School of Medicine. After that it is known as RUSM.
In 1985 the Board of Medical Quality Assurance of California state medical licensing, started inquiry RUSM, as well as other medical schools situated in the Caribbean areas. The officials published a report saying that RUSM at the time hadn’t the standard of admissions, and RUSM was giving business medical degree to “everyone that wants one.” Later, the University accepted to implement the several changes recommended by the board and has since granted graduation more than 11,000 practicing physicians.
About 1998, RUSM intended to open new medical school in Casper, Wyoming of the United States but Liaison Committee on Medical Committee denied to provide accreditation. That organization accredits MD-granting medical schools in the United Stated of America. Some local welcomed it but criticisms were raised in the quality education regarding for-profit institution in the state. The University was purchased by DeVry Education Group in 2003.
Campus
The Ross University School of Medicine pre-clinical campus is located in Dominica. There are a simulation center, a medical and anatomical imaging laboratory, as well as classrooms equipped with plasma screen in the campus. RUSM inaugurated new Student Center having a 50,000 square feet facility housing the library, students study spaces, student services departments, and other spaces in 2005.
Clinical Training
Ross University does not affiliate or possess with a primary teaching hospital unlike other many American medical schools do. Academic Outcomes
The Ross University School of Medicine accepts many students who were unable to get admission to medical schools in the United States of America, like many other Caribbean medical schools practice. Attrition rates are higher than in US medical schools in RUSM.
The National Resident Match Program released a report that , 595 medical students got graduation from Dominica out of total of 1100 students who did apply for 2013 matched to a residency program.
DeVry Education Group
DeVry Education Group is very famous group of company formerly known as DeVry Inc that possesses RUSM, in addition to other private universities consisting of the American University of the Caribbean (AUC), another for-profit medical school in the Caribbean, Chamberlain College of Nursing, and Keller Graduate School of Management. It is a publicly traded company. DeVry Inc got the notice from the offices of the Illinois Attorney General and the Massachusetts Attorney General in the case of its use of student loans, its compensation practices, as well as possible accounting malpractice in company.
Admissions and Financial Aids
