New York University (NYU) is one of the secular private research universities of United States. It is New York based University. Established in 1831, NYU is the largest private nonprofit (like public university) institution of American higher education. Student Life
The government body of student at NYC is the Student Senator Council. It’s simply known as SSC at NYC. The SSC has been involving in various issues related to students for the benefit of students. It had participated in controversial debate on campus, including striking on campus in 2011, as a campus wide ban sale of Coca-Cola products in 2005.
Over 450 student clubs and registered organizations are at NYC. In addition to study clubs, sports team, fraternities, and sororities at NYC, there are many registered and non-registered organizations on campus that prioritize on entertainment, arts, and culture. These organizations comprise various student media clubs: including the daily student newspaper the Washington Square News, the NYC Local daily blog, The Plague comedy magazine as well as Washington Square Local web-based satire news. NYU runs a radio station WNYU-FM 89.1.
Some of the first fraternities in the United States were founded at NYC. In 1937, Greek life first formed on the New York University. It was formed for their mutual interests like service activities, professional life, athletic and intellectual life but later it diverted to attract student who also formed other groups. About 13% of students of NYU are involving in fraternities and sororities as the data of 2014. There are four governing boards which oversee Greek life at NYC.
The Team of Sports of NYU is simply referred to as the NYU Violets. NYU’s sports team NYU Violets are women’s and men’s varsity fencing, golf, cross country, football, swimming and diving, track and field, volleyball, wrestling, and basketball. Except fencing, all of NYU’s sports teams compete in the University Athletic Association and the NCAA’s Division III but fencing is participated in Division I. Students of NYU also participate in club and intramural sports, like baseball, basketball, football, martial arts and various games.
Admission and Financial Aid
NYU’s admission is highly-selective procedure for undergraduate programs. For the class of 2019, only 31% applicants (18,500) were admitted whereas 60,332 applications were received by NYU. For the academic year 2014-15, there is 5,873 total freshmen representing almost all states of US and 90 countries. The unweighted GPA score of most freshmen is 3.5 point. The student-faculty ratio at the New York Campus is 10:1, and less then that at Shanghai (China) and Abu Dhabi (UAE) campuses.
Financial Aid is provided NYU. Scholarships and Grants, Loans, Student Employment are available in the University. Scholarships and grants are provided according to both merit-based and need-based for student whose families are unable to pay the full cost of the NYU’s education. Loans are suggested by NYU in several types for which a student is eligible, based on curtained criteria and for campus-administered loans. Students are provided Student Employment for 15-20 hour per week to pay cost of the university.
